What to Wear on a Cruise Cruise Clothes & Outfits to Look Fabulous

cruise clothes ideas

On most nights my husband wore khakis, but this evening he wore a jeans and a polo style shirt. This rose purple summer dress ended up being one of my favorites! Since I’m only 5.2 it’s a bit longer than a true mid length dress, but I still loved it. The straps are adjustable and it has a loose top, which makes it a flattering cruise outfit for women of any age and body type. I’m short and love to wear comfortable wedge sandals that I can walk in easily. I always pack at least one pair of stylish neutral wedge style sandals to wear during the day and evening (seen in photo below).

My suitcase was a jumbled mess of clothing, jewelry, shoes, and toiletries before begrudgingly giving travel organizers a try. Okay, maybe I tend to overplan my shoes, but what can I say? My shoes are Choos and I hardly leave home without fabulous footwear—a friend once asked if I was sick when I tried.

Bathing Suits and Cover Ups

You can still expect to dress up on a cruise, but there are more opportunities to dress less formally if you prefer this as well. Yet, we weren’t out of place and certainly at that time, most men were either in a dark suit or tuxedo. Most women wore long gowns or cocktail dresses on formal nights on a cruise.

Cruise Clothing Basics to Pack for a Cruise

These are great to have for strenuous activities, adventurous excursions, and exploring ports of call. Double-check which cruise line you are cruising with to see the exact evening dress code. I took a cooking class in St. Kitts on a cruise excursion.

Self-declaring as “not a cruise person,” the opportunity to dig out my chicest resort wear became the saving grace for a 14-day Caribbean cruise I accidentally ended up on. I hope this post and the photos gave you some ideas of what to wear and how to pack for your upcoming cruise. Remember to pack 2-3 bathing suits, to have a rotation if one is wet. Packing 1-2 swimsuit cover ups for sea days and beach days will come in handy. We dressed up for the first gala night, and had a wonderful dinner in the main dining room with new cruise friends. Ensure you have a neutral-colored pair of underwear, especially if you plan to wear white outfits.

I wore a light floral sundress for my embarkation day outfit. I also rewore this dress later on during the week on a casual night in the main dining room. I just back from a relaxing and fun cruise and I have a lot of tropical cruise outfits to share. While not mandatory, many cruise lines will have an optional white themed evening or white party. Research your cruise to see if there are special theme nights that require specific attire, including a white dress.

If you have time to change before heading to the cruise ship on embarkation day, wear something comfortable that you also feel good in. Remember that you can pack lighter by wearing outfits more than once on a cruise. A good tip is to pair a daytime outfit with dressier shoes and some jewelry, and wear it in the evening for a whole new look. Use this list of cruise wear to plan outfits to wear on a 7 day cruise.

Like most of the other dresses in this list of cruise outfit ideas, it’s very affordable. While most Caribbean cruises are relatively casual, some have formal nights or there may be one or two nights where you’ll want to dress up a bit. If you’re going on a family cruise, you might be wondering how dress codes apply to children. Most cruise lines are fine with children wearing nice shorts in the dining room and restaurants for evening dinners. Most evenings on a cruise will be casual, smart casual or resort casual dress code. Many cruise lines now allow wearing nice jeans to the main dining room on a cruise, a change from the past.

You can normally count on two formal nights on a seven-night cruise, with the remaining evenings more relaxed. Refuse to wear a tie on vacation, or can't be bothered packing a garment bag with fancy dresses? Choose room service or the buffet for dinner, where the evening's dress code isn't in effect.

Pack a sun hat, sunglasses, statement jewelry, a tote bag, and a cute clutch to complete your cruise wardrobe. Teenagers can dress casually on a cruise most of the time, but should follow dress codes in the main dining room. A casual dress for ladies, or a nice pair of pants and a stylish top is perfect. A good suggestion for men is a polo style shirt and pants or a pair of dark jeans. In our experience, family oriented cruise lines are understandably much more “casual” than “higher-end” cruise lines.

The comfortable and stretchy fabric make this dress ideal for spending time out on the deck. Paired with a necklace and some earrings and the dress can be taken from the deck to the bar easily. As well as making sure you look on form when you are on your cruise, by following a list and planning ahead you are less likely to forget any items of clothing behind.

This linen top by Reformation is equal parts romantic and edgy and styles well with sneakers or heels. After a long day by the pool, there's nothing better than putting on a strapless sundress to show off your sun-kissed shoulders and freckled skin. Pair the look with flats for comfort, and add a pop of color to your white-hot look with statement earrings.

So whether this is your first cruise or if you are a seasoned cruiser, I hope you find some new inspiration for your upcoming cruise with these new cruise outfits. A halter chiffon top like this pairs beautifully with a white skirt, pants or jeans. It can go from day to evening, depending on how dressy you’re feeling.

The glistening waters, the sun decks with their loungers, and, of course, the inviting pool bars! Navigating the vast array of day activities on a cruise can be both exhilarating and, admittedly, a bit overwhelming. Setting sail on a luxurious cruise is an experience unlike any other. From the gentle sway of the ship to the endless horizons, there’s magic in every moment. When it's time to hit the town at night, add some accessories to soften this look like dainty jewelry, colorful slip-on shoes, a Panama hat and a handbag. Before showtime at the onboard theater, change into a skirt or trousers, dress shoes and an airy scarf for a polished look.

Instead, you’ll find smart casual, or evening chic dress codes in place for dinner. I would pack two outfits per day on a cruise- something to wear during the day either on board or at a port of call, and something a bit dressier for the evening. Now you can wear a swimsuit & coverup more than once on your vacation, so keep that in mind when you’re packing. Some cruise lines have “formal” nights, but even in recent years the strictness of the dress code has become more lax. Formal dress codes for ladies include cocktail dresses, elegant skirts, and evening-wear blouses. A little black dress is always appropriate for cruise formal nights, however the lace detail on this dress just adds an extra touch of elegance.
